CHARLOTTE – Mayor Anthony Foxx is considered by some a rising star in the Democratic Party, and his week in the spotlight could help propel him to pursue higher offices in future elections.

North Carolina Democrats were energized Tuesday after seeing one of their own take center stage.

"I don't know that there is a ceiling for Anthony Foxx. I think the sky's the limit," said Tiffany Powers, a delegate from Lumberton. "He has vision and a person who knows where they want to go just has you buy into that vision."

Powers said Foxx's speech about Charlotte's can-do spirit was symbolic of the mayor's ability to lure the Democratic National Convention to his city.

"He said what he wanted to do for Charlotte, he brought this convention here, and here we are, all 50 states and territories," she said.

Foxx's potential in politics is also getting noticed by congressmen like 4th District Rep. David Price, who called the mayor charismatic.

Foxx, however, was humble after the speech, more a happy host than promising politician.

"It's gratifying. It's such an awesome feeling to have all of these folks from all over the country right here in the city,” he said.

Foxx briefly considered running for governor earlier this year after incumbent Democrat Bev Perdue decided not to go for a second term.

Republican city council member Andy Dulin said the mayor was a good representative for Charlotte during the DNC.
