Anniversary of Virginia quake that shook East Coast marked

CHARLOTTE—It has been one year since a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that originated in Virginia was felt in North Carolina.


A U.S. Geological Survey spokesperson said an estimated one-third of the U.S. population felt last years earthquake. 148,000 people actually reported the shaking. The spokesperson says it was the largest quake in this region of the country in the last century.


The earthquake damaged the Washington Monument in and the Washington Cathedral.


Scientists have been studying the quake's impact on the East Coast and are currently working to predict when another quake could occur.
