DURHAM — Another jogger has been attacked on the American Tobacco Trail in Durham and now questions concerning the safety are on the minds of residents.
Tuesday night's incident marks the sixth assault on the trail in recent months. While police continue to ramp up patrols in the area, they are also asking for the public's help. The victim in Tuesday's assault was able to escape on foot and was not injured.
Scott Saul calls Wake Forest home but during the day he works in Durham. On his lunch break, he fills his daily appetite for recreation jogging along Tobacco Trail. However recent attacks on the trail have made talks about safety an ongoing discussion at the office.
"Some of the ladies in the office would like someone to walk or run with during lunch. Just having a companion out here, I think it's more safe," said Saul.
Durham Police say a man jogging along the trail was attacked by a group of boys Tuesday night. It marks the sixth time an assault has been reported there in three months. Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said his officers are turning to the public for help.
"Since August 1, we've had over 79 directed patrols in that area. We are asking the community to help us find this group of youth that are out there," said Lopez.
Police say many of the attackers are teenagers. The victim in Tuesday night's attack claims the boys are between the ages of 12-years-old and 16-years-old. Saul said it raises the questions of what teenagers are up to in contemporary society.
Chief Lopez said patrolling the area is an ongoing process. Some of the methods they are looking at are video surveillance and ATV's. While the incidents can not be predicted, Chief Lopez said they should serve as a reminder for those using the trail to be extra cautious.
"You can be in the best of shape but you never know when something can happen," said Lopez.
