JACKSONVILLE — Onslow County is moving forward with plans to relocate most county offices in one central location.
No final decisions were made on the plans during a special Board of Commissioners meeting Monday morning. The meeting was originally intended to serve as a place for the city of Jacksonville and Onslow County commissioners to speak to one another about the project but the city declined to attend.
County manager Jeff Hudson said the moving most county office to Burton Park could spur growth there.
"We need a new direction and perhaps placing a government center with it's new energy and economic development support would give Burton Park a boost," said Hudson.
The 700 acre park was created a decade ago but so far only two businesses have located there. The Jacksonville City Council must approve a sewer allocation in order for the county office plans to move forward.
That will be discussed at the council's next meeting on Sept. 4.
