HIGH POINT -- The cost of new clothes, shoes and school supplies can make heading back to school a stressful time for families struggling to make ends meet. Thirty kids in High Point won't have to worry about that thanks to a donation from Target.

Some kids have a list of what they need.

“I'm looking for khakis, blue navy's, a lot of school pants and stuff,” said 6th-grader Kaliyah McDowell.

Now is the time to find some bargains, but for one back-to-school shopping trip a group of students will not spend a a dime. Target is teaming up with the Salvation Army and giving the kids an $80 gift card to spend.

“[It is nice because] you don't have to come out here and worry about what you're spending. While you're having fun, you're still, at the same time, helping yourself,” said 9th-grader Hailey Debty.

Organizers said without this help, these kids wouldn't have the supplies they need for school.

“They're living in the shelter, they're living in impoverished situations. So for them to get the new outfits to go to school, especially now that a lot of our schools are requiring uniforms. For them to actually have what they need so that they can fit in and feel comfortable, it just helps their learning process so much more,” said Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club High Point Executive Director Tonia Stephenson.

The kids do not have to worry about school supplies either. The Salvation Army is donating those, meaning every cent can go towards getting the clothes they need to head back to the classroom in just a few weeks.

“And what's really neat about this is that we do school supply drives all over the county and they get those types of things like paper and pencils but for this they can actually get things like clothes or shoes or socks,” Stephenson said.

Officials say they chose the children from the Boys and Girls Club who had the greatest need.
