GREENSBORO, N.C.--More than 580 students qualified for a chance to win a Toyota Prius. They tried their luck, each with a different key, but it was Daniel Horschler who got it started.

"It's pretty unbelievable. I didn't expect it at all. I was getting ready to leave. It was getting late," he said.

He just graduated from High Point Central and is getting ready to head off to UNC-Chapel Hill to study computer sciences.

The students all qualified for a chance at the car by passing five more more advanced placement exams, or by completing five more college courses in high school. Horschler passed seven AP exams.

"We did have in increase with AP success with this class, and there were students who took more than 10 AP classes in their four years of high school and that's amazing,” said Dibrelle Tourret, Guilford County School's Interim Director for the Academically Gifted.

This year's participants passed a total of 3,748 AP and IB exams as well as 1,025 qualifying college courses.

Other prizes, such as iPods and iPads were given to 70 other Guilford County students. The rest walked away with an iTunes gift card. But ironically, the one who won the car can only admire it for now.

"I don't have my license yet, but I do have a Tribute, a 2001 Tribute,” Horschler said. He says his new Prius will likely replace the Tribute.

It'll take its place, but even when he gets his license, that place may still be in his driveway at home.

"I don't think we can take it with us first year. I don't think they allow freshman to have a car," he said.

Local businesses donated money for all the prizes Sunday. Rice Toyota donated the Prius.
