CHARLOTTE – A woman was taken into custody Thursday after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say she hit a bicyclist with her car and kept going. Just hours after the crash, highway patrol troopers arrested 25-year-old Jenna Woodring of Charlotte, meanwhile the cyclist remains in the hospital.

Police say the 50-year-old man was riding his bicycle on Brown Grier Road, near Gallant Lane, when he was struck. People who travel along the busy two-lane road in southwest Charlotte were not surprised to learn of the hit-and-run.

"During rush hour, it's very busy so you really have to watch it," said Kevin Stump. "That's a reason why we all wear bright ugly uniforms. The more you can see us, the easier it is for someone to pay attention."

According to the Charlotte Department of Transportation, there are at least 90 bicycle-related crashes every year, but some believe those accidents can be prevented if both drivers and cyclists do a better job at sharing the road.

"A lot of time you have people buzzing right by you and it throws you. Both people just have to be giving towards the other," said Stump.

A few hours after the crash, Woodring was arrested. Police say someone spotted her driving recklessly on I-485 and that her car has major damage to the front and windshield. Officers also found several bottles of prescription drugs in her purse.

Woodring is charged with DWI, felony hit-and-run and felony serious injury by vehicle.

Police have not released the name of the cyclist.
