CHARLOTTE — It seems as if there will not be a break from the heat any time soon, causing officials to open a cooling station in Uptown.

The station is located at 618 North College Street, at the homeless resource center at the Hal Marshal Annex.

Temperatures are forecasted to be close to the 100 degree mark Saturday and Sunday. However the heat index will feel even hotter, up to 105 degrees. Which is why the American Red Cross and Mecklenburg County are teaming up and are opening the cooling station.

The station is open to anyone who is getting too hot and feels they need a break from the heat. However, Red Cross officials are really targeting those who do not have access to air conditioning at their home, or individuals who are homeless. People can stop by for some AC, a snack, and a cold drink to help cool off.

With the heat, being outside for even a short amount of time, can put people at risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, so officials want to make sure people are staying safe.

The best thing to do in this weather is to wear light, loose fitting clothing, take breaks in shaded areas or inside with air conditioning, and drink plenty of fluids.

The cooling center will be open Saturday and Sunday from Noon until 8 p.m.
