The North Carolina Museum of History will hold an commemorative event called “Sisterhood of Miss North Carolina: Celebrating 75 Years of Memories” from June 22 until November 25. This event not only celebrates and honors the previous contestant winners, but also provides a glimpse into the history of the pageant.

“They asked each of us to contribute a little something from our year, so that people can go and learn about the impact Miss NC has on the state,” said Jessica Jacobs Marquardt, the 2007 winner.

Many of the past Miss North Carolina winners are returning for the event.

“There will be 43, I think, that will be coming back,” said Trudy Riley Kearny, Miss NC 1946. “I'm the oldest one!”

Not all of the winners still live in North Carolina. Some are flying in from other parts of the country, such as Atlanta, Ga.

Even though the Miss North Carolinas are scattered across the nation, they still consider their group close.

“We call it that, the sisterhood. Every year, we try to get together and exchange stories about our years as Miss North Carolina,” said Jacobs Marquardt.

They sometimes hold luncheons for the girls competing for Miss America. This year, it's at the Governor's Mansion in Raleigh. The last time the luncheon was held at the Governor's Mansion was in the 1960s.

The pageant is also being televised for the first time in 17 years.

“It's another reason to celebrate this year,” said Finch Van Vechten.
