ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Neighbors said they started seeing signs of law enforcement activity Wednesday evening, around this mobile home outside of Asheboro.
"Six squad cars showed up and three or four undercover cop cars, unannounced, and they were pulling in, and walking up there,'' said neighbor Vanessa Ornelas.
They were investigating the disappearance of John Russell Morris, 31, of Durham.
"There was a residence on Mount Shepherd Road that had been using the credit cards of this missing person, said Randolph County Sheriff Maynard Reid.
Investigators also found some other grim evidence.
"They found evidence there of a car that had been burned,'' said Reid. "Where the vehicle had been burned, there was a shallow grave underneath, where they have found a body."
Investigators said they think Morris, who used to be involved with Jessica Dawson Summery, came to visit her around May 25 and encountered her new boyfriend, Shaun Michael Lundy.
"This led to a confrontation and a murder,'' said Reid.
Summy and Lundy were located in Tazwell, Virginia early Thursday and charged with murder. They've waived extradition to Randolph County to face charges.
Reid said the unburned parts of the Jeep were sold as scrap and traced to Lundy.
Neighbors said it wasn't unusually to see burning at this home.
"Somebody was always burning, like where they pushed down woods for their garden and stuff like that, and burning what we thought was trash," Ornelas said.
And the folks who live along this quiet street out in the country said they're shocked that something like this could happen here.
"I just can't see someone killing someone, but we heard, someone's got killed, and they burned them in their yard," said Ornelas.
She said she still feels safe.
"I do, cause I got my dogs, no one comes in our yard." she said.
