FAYETTEVILLE – A Fayetteville woman is continuing her tradition of honoring Fort Bragg's fallen heroes this memorial day.

Barbara Morris created the memorial garden four years ago, which honors soldiers who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We've all seen the faces. We've all thought about the unthinkable.

"I was watching the news, and they showed this little GI and he looked so young,” said Barbara Morris. "My mind is thinking what is his mother going to think when that knock comes on the door."

But Barbara Morris saw that young face and made a decision.

"That minute I knew I had to do something,” she said.

Four years ago, Barbara created a memorial honoring the men and women stationed at Fort Bragg who have died in Iraq or Afghanistan. For the first three years, it was in her yard, but this year she took up an offer to display it in public so that more people would see it, and remember what Memorial Day is really about.

It's about the men and women who have died serving this country, and remembering them individually, not just collectively -- like SSgt. Laurent J. West.

"His wife, she read this right here at Arlington at his funeral,” said Morris.

Or SSgt. Jason Hickman, whose friend carried him from battle and made his cross personally.

"The guy who made that cross carried him on his shoulder until he died,” said Morris.

Or Spec. Christopher Moon, who has a horseshoe on his cross.

"It was thrown at his wedding,” said Morris.

And there are so many others Barbara remembers individually. Every year, she meets more loved ones who visit her memorial.

"I've heard so many stories from a mother or a wife or a brother or a good friend, or someone that was with them, I feel like I know them, so they're more than just a cross to me,” she said.

The memorial is located at Cornerstone United Methodist Church on Rim Road.
