Homebuyers taking to the skies with downtown Raleigh condos

RALEIGH -- As the housing market slowly starts to rebound, some buyers are steering away from the suburbs and taking to the skylines. Condo sales in downtown Raleigh are on the rise.


“I'm very happy with my purchase,” said Lisa Bauerlein, who bought a downtown condo in The West building six months ago. “I wanted to be somewhere a little more urban. Being able to walk everywhere is awesome. I love the energy down here. There's always something to do.”


Ann-Cabell Baum Anderson is a realtor with the Glenwood Agency , specializing in downtown Raleigh real estate. She said available condos downtown are becoming harder to find.


“Inventory in downtown is really starting to dwindle,” she said. “Obviously in the past couple of years with the economy, there's been a plethora of available units. Now there's not.”


At any given time, there are about 50 condos for sale in downtown Raleigh. But with the market improving, there are only about two dozen left that are still new.


So how much does it cost to live along the skyline?


“Prices downtown right now are ranging anywhere from about $180,000 all the way up to about $850,000 or $900,000.”


“You pay to live in this area,” Bauerlein said. “You will pay a premium, but to me, it's totally worth it!”
