Stand-up comic Bobcat Goldthwait has turned his attention over the last few years to writing and directing films. His latest effort is a satirical dark comedy called "God Bless America."

Meet Frank. He's just lost his job and feels that American culture has degraded to the point of no return. He's turned off by talentless reality TV stars, he's fed up listening to rich, arrogant, one-sided political talk show hosts. He can't stand people people who text all the time and there's a list of a dozens or so other offenders that Frank lost any semblance of patience for.

So he decides to take action. His first target is a spoiled reality TV show brat. Simply put, Frank kills her.

Teaming up with a 16-year-old, newfound fan, they hit the road and murder all the people who have been bugging them.

Writer-director Goldthwait takes aim at scores of culturally debased targets and rude people. This intelligently written film has a lot to say about the state of our culture and Goldthwait has made a bold movie that's often very funny. One sequence that clearly parodies Willliam Hung from "American Idol" is exceptionally hilarious.

It's dark, and won't be everyone's cup of tea. But I liked it and give Goldthwait props for having the guts to make a film like this.

Goldthwait seems to be having a ball directing this duo played by Joel Murray and Tara Lynne Barr as they scathingly rip apart what Goldthwait feels is wrong with American society.

It's a bit long, it's also a one note kind of thing that sort of lags for a good half hour in the middle. But it does bounce back strongly and viciously by the end.

"God Bless America" opens in theaters this week and is also currently available on Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand.
