GREENSBORO – The Guilford County school board voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve a more than $626 million operating budget for the 2012-2013 school year.

Members are asking county commissioners for nearly $10 million to support operating costs and a 1 percent raise for system employees with the exception of Superintendent Mo Green. The board is also asking for $7 million to help maintain school facilities.

Commissioners have said the system will get "no where near what it's requesting,” but Green says he's counting on some compromise.

"There may be things that they can look at in their budget and ways to reduce expenses that will allow us to have more money come our way," he said.

The board will present its adopted budget to county commissioners Thursday. Commissioners have until July 1 to approve the budget.
