The marriage amendment still is popular among North Carolina voters, 55 percent to 41 percent, but many voters still don't understand what the amendment will do.

Public Policy Polling, in its latest release on the marriage amendment, said 55 percent of voters in the state support some kind of legal recognition for same-sex couples, in the form of civil unions or domestic partnerships.

But 55 percent also plan to vote for the amendment that would prohibit any form of legal recognition for same-sex couples.

PPP found that about 40 percent understand the amendment bans both civil unions and same-sex marriage, a challenge for opponents of the amendment with only a week left before the May 8 primary.

PPP also found that independent voters are about evenly split on the amendment, with 48 percent in support and 46 percent against it.

Voters in the Triangle oppose the amendment, 51 percent to 46 percent, while voters in the Charlotte metro region (54/40), the Triad (55/42) and the mountains (55/39) support the amendment, in margins similar to statewide

Voters down east strongly support the amendment, with 64 percent to 32 percent against.

Not surprisingly, there is also a huge generational gap among voters, with seniors supporting the amendment 60 percent to 36 percent opposed, while young voters oppose the amendment 59 percent to 33 percent.
