RALEIGH — Recently, along with the scent of coffee wafting from the doors of Loco Lu's coffeehouse off Hollyridge Drive in Raleigh, one could hear the peaceful sounds of the Native American Flute.

It was from the monthly meeting of the Neuse River Flute Circle, (NRFC) a group founded in 2005 that is also a member of the International Native American Flute Association. John Kincheloe and Eddie Thomas were the co-founders of the Flute Circle, which soon grew to include six founding members. Today the NRFC has a rooster of over 90 men and women from all across the Triangle area, with flute enthusiasts that travel from as far as Morehead City to attend meetings.

Group works to preserve sound of indigenous flute
The purpose of the Neuse River Flute Circle is:

• To promote the continuation of the indigenous flutes of North America

• To support those who want to expand their ability to play the flute and learn about the music

• To encourage the maker and making of Native American style flutes

• To provide a venue for sharing music and musical resources with those interested in such flutes

• To establish a coordination amongst individuals, associations, and other flute circles

• To cultivate interest in the Native American Flute and in American Indian flute music through educational outreach programs, performances and scholarly research

• To bring individuals together on a regular basis and in an open and inclusive way, to celebrate and explore the richness of American Indian flute music. All are welcome!

For more information about the NRFC, Send an Email to Eddie Thomas . You may also keep in touch with the group's Facebook page.
