RALEIGH – Law enforcement officers across the state will be out in full force this weekend looking for drunken drivers.

Thousands of officers will be on patrol and DWI checkpoints set up to deter those who have been drinking during St. Patrick's Day celebrations from getting behind the wheel.

Every 53 minutes across the United States, someone loses their life in a drunken driving collision. More than 800 people were charged during last year's St Patrick's Day Booze it and Lose it campaign.

The State Highway Patrol says more than 200 fatal collisions last year were alcohol related, so they're stressing the importance of being responsible and making smart decisions during this holiday weekend.
