CHARLOTTE -- Mecklenburg County commissioners unanimously voted to support state legislation that would give retroactive refunds to homeowners affected by inflated property values in the 2011 revaluation.

Commissioners asked the county attorney Tuesday night to work with legislators to draft a bill. Last year, an independent study stated the revaluation contained thousands of flaws. The study prompted the resignation of the tax assessor and the beginning of a process by the commission to improve future revaluations.

"The least that they deserve is for their new county commission to say 'we're going to be proactive and we're going to request some sort of legislation which will allow us to do the right thing,'" said GOP Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour

Some Mecklenburg County commissioners will meet Friday with state Sen. Jeff Tarte of Cornelius to talk about what to include in proposed legislation. An independent review continues across Mecklenburg County to determine if there were additional flaws in other neighborhoods.
