DURHAM — A suspect wanted in connection with shooting a state trooper in Durham during a traffic stop was taken into custody Tuesday while the trooper he's accused of shooting remains in the hospital. Mikel Brady, 23, is expected to appear in court Wednesday.

Highway Patrol said the incident happened during a traffic stop on US-70 near the Cheek Road exit in Durham Monday night. Trooper Michael Potts, 42, was shot in the face, hand and shoulder. He is in stable condition at Duke Medical Center.

What started out as a routine traffic stop, quickly turned into a near death experience for the State Trooper.

"An 11-year veteran trooper was stopping this car in part because he was not wearing a seatbelt. We believe four shots were fired, all of them injured our trooper," said Kieran Shanahan with the Dept. of Public Safety.

Brady has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

The shooting triggered a manhunt for the suspect responsible. Law enforcement agencies across the state were asked to be on the lookout for Brady, 23, a suspect that police said was already wanted on felony charges in Vermont.

Authorities believe that after he fled his car and was later picked up by a woman in a Honda Accord with Vermont tags.

The North Carolina Troopers Association called for the community's prayers on its Facebook page. During difficult times like this, the association provides emotional support for the family.

Potts is an 11-year veteran who joined the patrol August 2001. He is assigned to the Durham district office.
