WILMINGTON — Some UNC-Wilmington students received special recognition from the Wilmington Fire Department on Tuesday.
Members of the university's Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity presented a $6,000 check to the Wilmington firefighters memorial.
The memorial is being built to honor the seven Wilmington firefighters who have died while serving and the 343 New York City firefighters who died on 9/11.
Fraternity members say it was a labor of love and respect.
"Firefighters, they're our heroes. They're our local heroes. We lost seven and 300, like you said in 9.11. So, just to give something back to them for what they do everyday. We love doing local charity. It made perfect sense for us," said Matthew Soles of Pi Kappa Alpha.
So far, a little more than $100,000 of the $250,000 needed has been raised to bring the memorial to completion.
