CHARLOTTE—President Barack Obama's gun policy task force continues its work to figure out ways to prevent another mass shooting.
Vice President Joe Biden led a series of task force meetings in Washington on Wednesday. But the vice president began the gun policy discussion just a few weeks ago with a conference call to a dozen mayors across the country.
Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx was in on the call.
“I want to make it clear that we are not going to get caught up in the notion, unless we can do everything, we are going to do nothing. It is critically important we act,” said Biden.
Wednesday, Biden met with gun safety organizations and victims groups. He plans to meet on Thursday with the National Rifle Association and other gun-owner groups.
"I want it clear to the American public that on behalf of the president we are reaching out to all parties on whatever side of this debate you fall,” said Biden.
The vice president already reached out to 12 mayors across the country, including Charlotte mayor Anthony Foxx, a few weeks ago. Foxx described the hour and a half phone call as “very intense.”
“I came to the conversation with how the administration plans to deal with assault weapons and high capacity magazines and issues of that type. And I left the conversation feeling confident that those issues were on the table and they’re going to try to figure a way to move forward,” said Foxx.
The vice-president asked the mayors for suggestions to reduce gun violence. Foxx said he is still working on his recommendations.
“There’s expertise at the county level on issues like health. There are issues with the school system in terms of security, so I’m trying to get some comprehensive input so we can give the best advice possible,” said Foxx.
It is advice Biden will put to use soon. His taskforce is expected to offer recommendations by the end of the month.
