MECKLENBURG COUNTY — Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputies were still making contact with registered sex offenders Wednesday night.
Law enforcement officers spent the last two weeks leading up to Halloween attempting to verify more than 750 sex offender's information and laying down the ground rules for Halloween. As of Wednesday afternoon 488 offenders were verified, but 246 offenders were still outstanding and unaccounted for.
Maj. Rodney Collins of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said the public should not be concerned by the amount of unverified offenders.
"Deputies could have gone out and they could not have been at home. There are other factors that could have been in play there. There is no need for concern,” said Collins.
As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 20 warrants had been issued for sex offenders who have not registered properly in Mecklenburg County.
Sheriff's deputies say most offenders cooperate and update their information correctly.
