CHARLOTTE – The United States Geological Survey is reporting a small earthquake in McDowell County on Monday morning.

The 2.9-magnitude quake happened in Marion – which lies along Interstate 40 between Hickory and Asheville – just before 8 a.m.

Residents in southern McDowell county reported feeling structures shake and hearing a loud boom. There were no injuries or damage reported.
