CHARLOTTE -- Thousands of people are in Charlotte Thursday for the 83rd annual Mallard Creek Barbecue. The event has become a traditional stop for political candidates stumping for votes.

Preparations have been underway there for about a week. Nearly 20,000 people are expected to attend the annual fundraiser for Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church that has turned into a major event for local and state political candidates stumping for votes.

Every October the church hosts the big event. It's $9 for a plate of food but this is not your ordinary church barbecue.

Right next to the front lines many of your political candidates will be on hand to meet and greet voters. In fact, there is a barbecue line and then there's a line designated for those who want to rub elbows with local politicians.

News 14 Carolina will have complete coverage throughout the day including in depth interviews with various candidates and a special edition of Capital Tonight from the barbecue at 7 p.m.
