RALEIGH — The two candidates vying to be state superintendent of public instruction faced off Monday night in Raleigh.

Democrat June Atkinson has held the job for the past seven years. She is being challenged by Republican Wake School Board member John Tedesco. The League of Women Voters and 'Wake-up Wake County' hosted the candidate forum.

The two candidates disagreed on a lot of issues; one of them being how important it is for the superintendent to have a background in education.

“When I became state superintendent, our graduation rate was 68 percent and it has now gone to over 80 percent. My opponent, Mr. Tedesco, does not have a record of accomplishment. I have a record of accomplishment. My opponent does not have credentials in education and I do. I have experience in education and my opponent does not,” said Atkinson.

Tedesco brought up the notion that he offers another angle.

“I think I bring a different perspective to the table. I think I bring a perspective of a local leader who understands how local schools and local communities are burdened with the bureaucracy of Raleigh and we want empower our local districts to have more say in supporting their children,” said Tedesco.
