CHARLOTTE — A new cancer research and treatment center is now open in Charlotte.

The Levine Cancer Institute's new facility will give patients greater access to specialists and clinical trials. Carolinas Healthcare system is growing and it is providing even more resources to patients.

"This is going to be the nerve center and the hub of a large cancer network throughout the Carolinas," said Dr. Jean Chai.

Chai is one of many physicians at the new Levine Cancer Institute. Chai said the new multi-million dollar cancer center allows doctors to treat and educate patients at every phase.

"We're opening a phase one clinical trials research which will allow us to bring the newest research available at the earliest stages of trials," said Chai.

The new addition to Morehead Medical Park is 171,000 square feet and six stories tall. A new infusion center, family resource center and healing garden are just a few of the features of the new cancer institute.

"It will allow us to partner with community oncologists where 80 or 90 percent of cancer care is delivered and at the same time bring in high level academics and high level research at the Charlotte area," said Chai.

The Carolinas healthcare network serves 11,000 cancer patients every year.
