FORT BRAGG -- A brigadier general stationed at Fort Bragg faces a number of sex charges and other violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Army officials held a news conference about the incidents that happened overseas Wednesday afternoon.

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sinclair faces ten different charges, including forcible sodomy, wrongful sexual conduct, maltreatment of subordinates, and possession of alcohol and pornography while deployed.

The incidents occurred while Sinclair was deployed to Afghanistan, though no information about the date nor the victim or victims has been released.

He is a 27-year veteran of the army, and has earned numerous service medals including the the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

Sinclair returned from Afghanistan several months ago, where he was serving as deputy commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters.

After reading off the charges facing Sinclair, Public Affairs Officer Col. Kevin Arata talked about what happens next:

"The next phase of these proceedings will be an Article 32 investigation," said Arata. "This a preliminary hearing with an impartial investigating officer. The purpose of the hearing is to determine merits and the seriousness of the charges, so as to make recommendations if the matter should proceed to trial or not."

The date for that hearing has not yet been set, but Col. Arata did say he expects it to be open to the public.
