CHARLOTTE -- Several hundred protesters marched through uptown Charlotte Sunday afternoon. The March on Wall Street South was made up of more than 80 groups that had been working on this movement for the past 10 months and represented a variety of struggles including labor, civil rights and the environmental movement.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said there was one arrest, but little problems. A woman was arrested at College and 4th streets carrying a knife and wearing a mask.
A similar demonstration at the Republican National Convention in Tampa last week drew out less than 500 people, according to police there. The March on Wall Street South was expected to see anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 participants.
The protesters started out at Frazier Park and marched by Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Duke Energy and two spots where convention events will be held – Time Warner Cable Arena and Bank of America Stadium. They stopped in front of the headquarters of Bank of America and Duke Energy.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe said there were no major problems and it went well. There was an increased police presence throughout the area and a number of officers on bikes. Besides keeping peace in the area, they said their top priority was making sure everyone was safe from the heat and staying hydrated.
