CHARLOTTE--Thousands of people across the state are getting their hands on community credentials to take part in the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Starting Saturday morning, folks were able to get a pass for the September 6 event, to see President Obama and Vice President Biden accept their party's nomination at Bank of America Stadium in Uptown Charlotte.

For more than 12 hours, Steven Grimes and his friend Sheila Moore waited to be the first ones to get their hands on community credentials.

"We got here at 9:30 and we tried to get here so we can make sure we can get a ticket to go to the convention because we don't want to miss it,” said Grimes.

The duo slept in the car for much of the night. Then like many others, they pulled out their Obama gear and some lawn chairs to claim their spot in line.

"I don't want to miss this for the world! I made sure I took my vacation a couple a weeks ago so I could be here for this,” said Grimes.

While some Charlotte-area residents are vacationing out of town during the DNC, many in line say they're taking time off work just to stay here and participate in the events.

"I was planning to be in town no matter what, hoping for the chance to get to go to something, if not Thursday night then some other event perhaps. So I was going to be here either way, but this would definitely be the best part,” said Heather Ferguson, a Charlotte resident.

Ferguson brought her twin five-year-olds to get credentials. She said she wanted them to experience this moment in history.

"I think it's really exciting that the President's going to be in our town and it might be the chance of a lifetime,” said Ferguson.

And for those getting their hands on the passes, they say they're holding on to them tight.

"Oh with my life, yes. No doubt. No amount of money in the world...I'm not going to let go of it. And it's going to be a keepsake for later on,” said Sharon Himes, the fourth person in line at the west Charlotte location.

And in just a week and a half, they'll be sitting in the stands at Bank of America Stadium, as the rest of the country has their eyes on Charlotte.

"I will be screaming and yelling to the top of my voice, I will say that,” said Theodore Macon, a Charlotte resident who was third in line at the west Charlotte location.

As long as they're still available, community credentials will be given out until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the various locations across the state. A spokesman for the campaign said they'll look at the number of credentials they gave out at the end of the day Saturday, reassess, and decide when and how they'll give more out, if they're available.
