CHARLOTTE -- The lead architect for the planned new Charlotte Knights ballpark in uptown Charlotte promised the facility would be cozier and closer to the action than the current facility in Fort Mill, S.C.

Odell Associates will officially break ground in three weeks in Third Ward. The architect said no section will be no more than 20 rows deep, spreading out equally behind home plate and in the outfield. The facility seats 9,000 to 10,000 and includes a walking area around the entire ballpark site.

"You can walk the outfield behind the batter's eye and back into the concourse, so if you are one of the people who would rather people watch than player watch, it's a great ballpark for you," said Gaurav Gupte from Odell Associates.

A hotel is planned behind the left field but designers have promised their materials will look similar to the ballpark and not seriously block the uptown views.

The park should be ready in spring of 2014.
