BURGAW — Anthony Caputo, the man who trained the first division of African-American soldiers at the Montford Point Military Base in 1942, was honored on Wednesday.

Dozens of people came to honor him as he received a Medal of Honor at the Burgaw Fire Department. Caputo said he is proud to have been a part of training the first division of Black Marines in history.

"It's an honor that I cherish very much. It's a long time coming. It's been seventy years since we received the first Montford Point," said Caputo.

Caputo also said that he is pleased the government has recognized the fact that those soldiers came to the Marine Corps and have been successful. Caputo trained about 300 African-American soldiers.
