CHARLOTTE — A record number of students returned to class Monday at UNC Charlotte. The university expects more than 26,000 students, a number the campus has never experienced.

The freshman class is larger than the university anticipated, with more than 3,500 students enrolled. That adds to the overall record enrollment across campus.

"I think it's awesome they are expanding. I'm not worried about class size or anything. I think they're able to handle it,” said Sophomore Taylor McKillop.

UNC Charlotte began planning in May when it found out enrollment would be up.

"We're still enrolling right now and registering for the next 9 days. It looks like we'll be over 26,000 students for the first time,” said Enrollment management associate provost Tina McEntire.

The university made changes to freshman housing, added more sections to courses, and additional staff for high demand freshman classes. While the exact reason for the increase can not be pinpointed, representatives with the university said the start of their football program helped.

They also saw a record number of out of state freshman register for the fall semester.
