CHARLOTTE—A Charlotte woman was accused in a tax scheme designed to defraud the government of nearly $4 million.
Federal authorities say 40-year-old Candida Figueroa filed more than 800 phony income tax returns, claiming $3.8 million in refunds.
The refund checks were mailed to several different apartments, mostly in the Arrowood Crossing Apartment Complex in southwest Charlotte.
Figueroa is charged with conspiracy to defraud the government.
