WADESBORO, N.C.--The sinkhole in Wadesboro is growing and may not be fixed for a while.

It opened up on an access road off Highway 74 an officials say it has expanded to about 60 feet wide and 25 feet deep.

This forced several businesses to temporarily close.

A gorge behind the highway gave way during a recent rainstorm, causing the sinkhole.

Officials say the owner of the property must fix the sinkhole, which could take as much as six weeks.

"As a police chief in Wadesboro, I want to see Wadesboro taken care of, which means, get our people to work and get our businesses open,” said Chief Schutz.

Wadesboro's police chief is hopeful the sinkhole repair work will start no later than Monday.

Police officers will be monitoring the site to keep the public safe.
