WILMINGTON--Fall practice starts at Emsley A. Laney High School on Monday morning and Larry Williams, an offensive lineman for the Laney football team, is ready for the regular season to begin.
Williams has his sights set on Greenville. The 6'4" 285-pound senior committed to play for the East Carolina football team in June.
"ECU is a school that I thought would be a good program for me, I felt comfortable going there." said Williams
Initially, Williams thought he would receive a scholarship offer from NC State, since the school expressed interest in him as a sophomore.
"That didn't come through so it was kind of like an upset. It kind of made me mad," explained Williams. "I think ECU is the school for me."
ECU recruited Williams to play guard, but the three-year, two-way starter also racked up 28 tackles in 2011 for the Buccaneers as a defensive lineman.
"That's what I really want to do, defense, because it's just more fun," remarked Williams.
With the start of the season fastly approaching, Williams and the Bucs set a goal to advance to at least the third round of the 4-A state playoffs after Laney won its first playoff game since 2001, last season.
"Even though we have a lot of new guys, I'm feeling really confident that we can be real good," said Williams.
Williams and Laney High School open the 2012 season August 17, on the road against Jacksonville High School.
