CHARLOTTE--Supporters of a plan for Charlotte to buy the troubled Eastland Mall property held a rally Sunday afternoon.

They were trying to gain last minute support before the city council votes on a proposal to buy parts of the property and possibly turn it into a television and film studio.

About 30 people rallied and dozens more honked as they drove past in support of the project.

The Eastside Political Action Committee rallied on the corner of Sharon Amity Road and Central Avenue. The Charlotte City Council is considering buying 80 acres of the Eastland Mall site.

If council votes yes, the plan is to make the abandoned property marketable and quickly sell it to a developer.

PAC members say there has been significant interest in turning the property into a television and film studio.

They say there is $16 million set aside by the city council to help pay for the redevelopment, and $13 million would be drawn from that money and returned to the taxpayer upon resale of the property.

According to the NC Film Commission, the television and film industry has created 15,000 jobs in the state this year.

Advocates say this is exactly what the part of Charlotte needs to revitalize the area and stimulate the local economy.

Eastland Mall has been vacant for more than two years.

Charlotte City Council is set to vote Monday night.
