SALISBURY, N.C. – The Rowan County teacher at the center of a controversy involving a YouTube clip was suspended for 10 days without pay.

More than 1 million people watched the video as teacher Tanya Dixon-Neely berated a student telling him he would go to jail for criticizing President Barack Obama during a debate.

Her initial suspension came late last month, when one of her students at North Rowan High School posted his recording of an argument with Neely.

The school district released a statement and details about her personnel report Tuesday, adding “Ms. Dixon-Neely also has received messages that include racist language and sentiments. It is time for us to move beyond this incident so that we and everyone else who cares about our students can return our full attention to student success.”

Dixon-Neely will be reassigned to a position in the alternative to suspension program. The superintendent highlighted her previous good work as reason to give her a second chance.
