CHARLOTTE--Police say an underage drunk driver struck a vehicle shortly after 1:00 a.m. Saturday morning, killing a father and seriously injuring his wife and teenage daughter.

The accident happened less than a mile from this family's home. Neighbors say the family was headed to Miami to celebrate Father's Day.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say Steven Bennie Driggers is charged with driving while impaired and driving after drinking under the age of 21-years-old.

Police say Driggers crossed over the center line on Reedy Creek Road, hitting the Rodriguez family head-on before running off the road.

Reinaldo Rodriguez was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. Rodriguez's wife and 17-year-old daughter were also taken to the Carolinas Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

"My daughter is 14 and my son is 11. Tomorrow is Father's Day, and I know Daiti is going to be crying her eyes out. Their other daughter in Miami waiting to see them, so it's sad," said neighbor Russell Rowe.

Rowe said Maritza Rodriguez has been released from the hospital, but is still there with her daughter.

Steven Driggers is charged with DWI, felony death by vehicle, and involuntary manslaughter. His bond was set at $30,000 dollars.
