LINVILLE, N.C. -- Former Wachovia CEO John Medlin died Wednesday.
He suffered an apparent heart attack while playing tennis. Medlin joined the bank back in 1958 and served as CEO from 1988 until 2000, when he retired.
He's credited with overseeing the bank as it grew to become a national institution.
Medlin was raised on a farm near Benson in eastern North Carolina and graduated with a business degree from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Medlin was 78 years old.
