RALEIGH (AP) -- Ryan Mathews hit a three-run homer and Vance Williams struck out eight batters in six innings to help North Carolina State beat Sacred Heart 16-5 on Friday night in the Raleigh Regional of the NCAA tournament.

Matt Bergquist added a two-run single in the seven-run sixth inning for the top-seeded Wolfpack (40-17), while Brett Austin drove in three runs.

Mathews and Andrew Ciencin each had three hits for the Wolfpack, while Jake Fincher had two stolen bases.

Williams (4-3) allowed five hits to earn the win, while N.C. State's 16 runs matched a school record for an NCAA tournament game.

Hunter Phillips drove in three runs for the fourth-seeded Pioneers (25-31), who jumped to a 2-0 lead before Mathews' blast helped the Wolfpack push ahead.

Sacred Heart starter Troy Scribner (7-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits and eight runs in three innings.
