WHITEVILLE, N.C. -- Whiteville High School senior Hunter Smith plays three positions for the Wolfpack. Smith is a catcher, third basemen, and pitcher. During the regular season, the right-hander led the team with 73 strikeouts.

'"I love it, it's all eyes on me," said Hunter Smith, an infielder for the Whiteville baseball team.

Offensively, Smith batted .338 and drove in 20 runs for the Wolfpack. In addition to his play, the senior impacts the team through his leadership skills.

"He's been a leader by nature, he's a born leader not necessarily verbal, but he can be when he needs to be." said Brett Harwood, head coach of the Whiteville baseball team.

Whiteville is currently playing Northwood High School in the NCHSAA Eastern regional with a birth in the 2-A State Championship on the line. This is Smith's first playoff deep playoff run after spending his sophomore and junior seasons playing for East Columbus High School and his freshman year at Whiteville.

"I've been on a whirlwind, I'm here that's all that matters, so I'll see if we can get another ring." said Smith

Last season, Smith pitched for the East Columbus Gators on the way to its 2011 1-A State Championship, but the senior is happy to be back playing on the Wolfpack baseball team.

Smith will resume his career at the collegiate level at Gardner-Webb, where he hopes to pitch for the Bulldogs.
