Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Mike Murphy has agreed to play in the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia next year.
Murphy has been in the Carolina organization his entire career, spending the last three in the American Hockey League. He made his NHL debut this past season.
The move was somewhat of a surprise to the parent club, with Hurricanes director of hockey operations Ron Francis saying, "We thought he was developing well, so it’s surprising and disappointing that he decided to do that.”
Murphy said, via his Twitter account, "KHL/Russia bound next season! I'd like to thank the Hurricanes/Checkers organization & fans for an amazing 3 yrs! Memories I'll have forever!"
