CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools named its 2012 Teacher of the Year Sunday. Eric Tornfelt, who teaches at Mallard Creek High School, was honored during a ceremony at Carowinds.

He's a board certified teacher who's taught at Mallard Creek since it opened in 2007. Last year, he founded the school's summer mentoring program. He said he is humbled by the prestigious award.

CMS also named its teacher assistant of the year. The winner is Cindy Corwin of JH Gunn elementary.
