WINSTON-SALEM -- A large sinkhole blocks a heavily-traveled road behind Jefferson Elementary School. It's the aftermath of Monday night's heavy rain that left damage in front of and behind the elementary school.

"One year we may have two floods and one year we may have no floods at all. We are on a flood plain and it happens pretty often," said Principal Nora Baker of Jefferson Elementary School.

Since both roads were damaged due to Monday's wet weather, Baker said she had no choice but to cancel classes Monday.

"There was no damage to the school however, we always want to be on the side of safety and we did know how fast the water would recede.," said Baker.

The torrential downpours didn't spare nearby business owner Mike Noah either. He owns Southern Family Restaurant. It's a 19-year-old business that also shut down because of the weather.

"We kept looking outside and watching the water come down harder and harder and it started coming underneath the doors and eventually we had about two inches of water coming," said Noah. "It looked like a river running through the middle of the dining room."
