RALEIGH—The number of people applying for unemployment benefits continued to drop last week.

Weekly applications went down by 1,000 to 367,000 nationwide; a sign that hiring could pick up during the month of May. It is the second week of drops, which is an encouraging sign after rising most of April.

The national unemployment rate is currently at 8.1 percent.
