CHARLOTTE – Polls open in less than 24 hours for the primary election in North Carolina, and among the many local, state and federal races, one of the highest-profile votes will be for the much-debated Marriage Amendment.

Whether it's signs around town, rallies or forums, the issue has been discussed and debated heavily over the past couple of weeks and months. Over the weekend, several events took place around the state as community groups and churches took it as a last chance to have their opinion on the issue heard.

If passed, the amendment would define marriage as being between one man and one woman. Not all church congregations support the amendment, but those that do say it's the way it's written in the Bible.

Those individuals and groups opposing the amendment say it's discriminating against a certain population and prohibits domestic partnerships and civil unions.

Early voting ended this weekend, but as of last week, more than 300,000 ballots had already been cast. Polls open Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
