WAXHAW—Authorities have identified the pilot killed in a plane crash in Union County on Monday.
According to the Union County Sheriff's Office, Dwight Vanzanen of Washington State, died in the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash.
Vanzanen's amateur-built plane crashed in woods near an uncontrolled airfield used for pilot training for the global missionary organization Jaars. The plane was not associated with Jaars. Authorities say it is not clear what brought him to the landing area in Union County.
