RALEIGH -- Nearly 2,000 more children will get to participate in pre-K classes in North Carolina this year. Gov. Bev Perdue's office announced Wednesday morning that $9.3 million will go toward adding the additional slots for at-risk 4 year olds.
The money will come from child care subsidy funds on a one-time basis. Current funding only provides slots for about a third of the 67,000 children who are eligible for pre-K each year in North Carolina.
State lawmakers cut pre-K funding by 20 percent last year, but a judge later declared the cuts unconstitutional.
