CHARLOTTE -- Legendary NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty will serve as the honorary chairman for the 2012 Chiquita Classic. Chiquita Chairman and CEO Fernando Aguirre made the announcement Wednesday during a speech at the Latin American Chamber of Charlotte.

The classic raises thousands of dollars for local charities through its charity ticket program and other philanthropic initiatives.

"He's going to be a fantastic honorary chair of the tournament," said Aguirre. "We're going to be involving these two charities very heavily and obviously with this I hope the NASCAR community really becomes involved with the Chiquita Classic."

The Chiquita Classic is scheduled for Sept. 24-Sept. 30 at the Club at Longview in greater Charlotte.
