CHARLOTTE -- In just a month and a half, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to three reports of indecent exposure within a half a mile of Dilworth Elementary School. Police believe 36-year-old Michael Adams exposed himself to two women in the area and are trying to determine if Adams flashed other women.

"You have the types that are compulsive exhibitionist who do this because they just can't seem to help it and there's also a very small proportion of them that do this to threaten women," said Dr. Anna Cutlip from Pfeiffer University.

Cutlip said to the victims, the trauma is serious. In the Dilworth cases, the women said a man riding his bike exposed and fondled himself.

"There's a small proportion that are at risk for escalating. The majority of these types of people are not going to escalate and do anything other than what they're already being arrested for," said Cutlip.

But while most don't escalate, they may never stop committing the crime.

"If there's a type that's going to go and maybe escalate to other crimes, it would be the ones that are more looking for the fear in a woman's face when they do this rather than the guy who's just compulsively behaving this way," said Cutlip.

Adams served time in prison for breaking into cars and assault with a deadly weapon. Now he's facing three counts of indecent exposure and two counts of public masturbation. Police are investigating other reports to see if they are similar.
